The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
I was a little taken aback at first, but I got used to the little bolded sidebars from the story's narrator, which in this case happens to be Death himself (herself? itself?). The story was interesting, witty, and emotional. I'm glad my school's librarian checked it out for me and insisted that I read it. This was an interesting fictional narrative set during the Holocaust and narrated by Death--or in other words, not your usual book.
