I really wasn't expecting to like this book, but since I found it for ninety-nine cents, I figured I'd give it a go, and I'm glad I did. I expected it to be offensive and foul since it was so controversial when it was published, but either my standards are lower than I think, or times have really changed that much. Either way, I found this to be a real "page turner," so to speak. I hate to admit that I liked the protagonist, despite what he did, but it's true. I find vindication of my feelings in the fact that he at least does have a conscience. I can see, now, why the movie based on the book is considered a classic. I think I'll actually watch it next time I catch it on TCM.
